Birla Carbon Egypt presents keynote at Sustainability and Energy Conference at Pharos University in Alexandria
Birla Carbon Egypt was invited to the second International Conference on New Trends for Sustainable Energy (ICNTSE) 2018, organised by Pharos University in association with the Swedish KTH Royal Institute of Technology on November 5, 2018.
Dr Gilles Moninot, Global Director of Sustainability, Birla Carbon was the keynote speaker at the conference where he highlighted Birla Carbon’s environmental stewardship approach and performance. His lecture focused on Birla Carbon’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), carbon balance and the energy cycle optimization approach along with highlighting key focus area of this year’s sustainability report.
The Social Value of Carbon Black video when showcased, proved to be of interest to the audience since carbon black is a relatively unknown product to many.
The keynote and the BCE presentation on energy management was well received by the participants. The Dean of the University, presented Dr Moninot and Ayman Attia, General Manager, Birla Carbon Egypt with a memento.
In the afternoon technical session, BCE presented its success story with energy management, highlighting the improvement in energy conservation measures and water management, indicating the recycling of industrial waste water after treatment, achieving zero discharge.
The keynote address and BCE’s presentation was part of continued effort to ‘Share the Strength’ at BCE with the Pharos University, so that:
- The students develop a deeper understanding of the industrial world
- BCE and the University introduce projects with academic and industrial interest
- BCE is perceived as a responsible business and an environmental steward in the region
- BCE become an employer of choice of the students
The day after the conference, a technical discussion was held by the leadership team of BCE and a research group from Pharos University to design big bags made out of biodegradable material. The project cleared the feasibility study stage and the next phase was agreed to measure the rate of decomposition and chemically validate the end products.
The meeting concluded with the research group from Pharos University being asked to update their project proposal, by highlighting the overall value proposition through the life cycle assessment approach and identify the various steps required to industrialize this academic project.
