Birla Carbon Jining: A Success Story in the Making

Birla Carbon Jining, a greenfield plant built from foundation to production in a record time of 30 months, is Birla Carbon’s newest and most technologically advanced carbon black plant.

The Jining plant was built to provide high-quality carbon black to one of the fastest growing markets in the world – China. The plant, which currently has an installed capacity of 120,000 metric tonnes, will expand to 240,000 metric tonnes in phase 2

The new production facility, the Aditya Birla Group’s largest investment in China, will supply the Chinese customer base and will accommodate the growing demands for superior quality, technical solutions and performance.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, shares, “The Jining plant is well ahead of its time, whether it be the manufacturing processes involved or the environmental standards it follows. Everything that we have learned over our 150 plus years of manufacturing carbon black around the world has been poured into this facility. It is, in a manner of speaking, our magnum opus.”

Jining will produce traditional ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) grades and specific Birla Carbon grades for customers. The ASTM grades will focus on the tire industry, while many of the Birla Carbon grades will support mechanical rubber goods and other customer requirements.

Birla Carbon Jining is an “energy positive” plant with its unique energy management system. The cogen facility will generate high-pressure steam and electricity, which will first cater to captive consumption and have surplus electricity for export to the state grid. Its state-of-the-art De-SOx and De-NOx systems are ultra-modern emission control systems aligned to the Chinese environment norms to be adapted by 2021.

The Birla Carbon Jining plant produces traditional ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) grades and specific Birla Carbon grades for its customers.

The plant’s production capacity is 120,000 MT/year with the capability of expansion up to 240,000 MT/year as part of its phase 2 plans.

Birla Carbon Jining is an ‘energy positive’ plant as it has its own energy management system. The cogen facility generates high-pressure steam and the electricity first caters to captive consumption and the surplus is exported to the state grid.

The total investment for the plant is US$ 300 million.

Keeping sustainability as part of its global priorities, the Jining plant has been designed based on Birla Carbon’s Sustainable Operational Excellence (SOE) approach.

Technology has been used to ensure direct CO2 emissions per tonne of carbon black produced is lower than the industry.

The Jining facility uses state-of-the-art De-SOx and De-NOx boilers. These ultra-modern emission-control capabilities are aligned to the Chinese environment norms to be adapted by 2021.

The plant’s replacement of state grid electricity contributes in reducing fossil fuel usage and subsequently, the emissions.

As part of its waste management program, Water & Wastewater Treatment (WWT) and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) are used as part of its process.

It took a total of 2.3 million man hours without any safety incident to complete the building of this facility, which highlights Birla Carbon’s commitment to employee safety.

By adopting Job Safety Analysis (JSA) procedures, the plant helps integrate accepted safety and health principles and practices into its operations.

Multiple grades of carbon black are manufactured, catering to the needs of leading Chinese and multinational tire, rubber and allied industry customers.
